Shrestha asked him to resign as the chief minister as he had failed to handle the Corona situation in the state properly. Vijay Rupani proposed Bhupendra Patel as the new Chief Minister in the Legislative Party meeting and it was unanimously agreed.

Bhupendra Patel Bhai was a member of the Municipal Corporation from 1995 to 1996. After that he was the President of Prem Nagar Municipal Corporation from 1999 to 2000. From 2008 to 2010 he was the Vice Chairman of the School Board of Ahmedabad Mehuni Civil Corporation.
